Snellius Minerals Quartz Wedge Rock Crystal Variety QW3

 

This item is a rock crystal quartz wedge from Snellius Minerals LLC designed to showcase the optical properties of quartz.  This wedge is a bit more complicated geometry than the quartz slice.  My intention for the quartz wedge was to show off the dependence of the optical activity of quartz on the thickness of the crystal, however the result here is a more complicated interaction of interference colors and optical activity due to Snell's Law!  You will want a polariscope to fully appreciate the rock crystal quartz wedge.  The first photo shows the rock crystal wedge viewed with crossed polarizers.  The video demonstrates the optical properties of the rock crystal wedge with a polariscope.  The last three photos are under ambient lighting conditions with a ruler for scale.  If you want to learn more and see a demonstration of a rock crystal slice in action check out the video "Snellius Minerals LLC Quartz Slice" on Youtube.  Also check out the smoky quartz, citrine, and amethyst slices if you want the complete set of quartz slices demonstrated in the Youtube video.
