Here is a stunning and very cool set of vintage Premier 6” & 8” bongo drums in a gorgeous Golden Sun wrap.
6" has 4 lugs. 8" has 5 lugs.
Golden Sun wrap - I’ve never seen a set in this particular wrap. Perhaps they do exist but seems to be a rare find.
The set is an anomaly so I’ll try to include as much detail as possible; there is not a Premier badge but the 8” drum has a hole for a grommet. Perhaps they have been re-wrapped close to the time of purchase or possibly a special order. Perhaps the Golden Sun wrap came after the 5-lug bongo design?! They certainly look original despite the lack of a badge. The wrap has been fitted well and looks properly/factory-made.
I bought these bongos along with a matching ‘time-warp’ kit (one owner, bought in the 1970s) with all cymbals, percussion, sticks and accessories etc from the era, so it makes sense the bongos were bought and/or modified at a similar time. I would love to keep them and wouldn’t usually like to split a kit, but needs must.
The bracket/adapter inside the 8” is not in the usual place; it has been re-drilled and offset from the bracket/support which connects to the 6” drum. Unsure if there is any benefit to this or if this was common for the time. Either way, it appears to have been done carefully and looks neat on the exterior of the drum.
There is some discrepancy with the internal washers and screws/bolt - some appear to have been lost over time and replaced with non-matching fittings.
Chrome hoops and lugs are very good for the age. Naturally there are very minor marks/tarnish to the wrap, but these are difficult to spot and it is generally in lovely condition.
The 8” head appears to be slightly warped and doesn’t tension evenly so will likely need replacing.
The set comes with a carry case - presumably from the same era. This is in relatively good condition, well-made and sturdy.
Please feel free to ask questions.
UPDATE: I have added some photos with better light. One of the photos highlights one small area on the 6” drum that has a small cut in the wrap close to the bearing edge.
