Hawker Tempest Mk.V: The RAF's Ultimate Piston-Engine Interceptor
The Hawker Tempest Mk.V stands as one of the most formidable and effective piston-engine fighter aircraft of the Second World War. Designed as a development of the legendary Typhoon to solve high-altitude performance issues, it became renowned primarily for its devastating role in combating the V-1 flying bomb menace and as a superior low-to-medium altitude fighter.
Origin & Design Evolution
Typhoon's Problem Child: The Tempest emerged from the Hawker Typhoon, a powerful low-altitude fighter-bomber plagued by thick wings and poor high-altitude performance due to aerodynamic drag.
Sidney Camm's Solution: Designer Sidney Camm's breakthrough was a new, much thinner elliptical wing with a laminar flow profile. This wing, along with a lengthened fuselage and a new, close-fitting engine cowling for the Napier Sabre engine, dramatically reduced drag and improved performance at all altitudes.
The "Tempest" Name: Initially called the "Typhoon Mark II," the changes were so significant the aircraft was renamed Tempest.
Key Features of the Mk.V
Engine: One 2,400 hp Napier Sabre II 24-cylinder horizontal-H "sleeve-valve" liquid-cooled engine. This complex but powerful engine gave the Tempest its exceptional speed, especially at low altitude.
Armament: Four 20mm Hispano Mk.V cannons mounted in the wings outside the propeller arc. This provided concentrated firepower with excellent accuracy, superior to the convergence issues of wing-mounted guns.
Performance: Its most outstanding characteristic was its blistering low-altitude speed. It was the fastest piston-engine Allied fighter in the world below 20,000 feet, capable of over 430 mph (690 km/h).
Radar: Late-production Mk.Vs were equipped with Mk.II IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) and some with rudimentary radar warning receivers.
Combat Service & The "Diver" Killer
The Tempest Mk.V entered squadron service with No. 3 Squadron RAF in April 1944.
Normandy and Beyond: Initially used as a low-level air superiority fighter and fighter-bomber over the Normandy beachhead, it proved brutally effective against German transport and armor.
Defeating the V-1 "Doodlebug": The Tempest found its most famous role from June 1944. Its incredible speed at low altitude made it the most successful V-1 intercept aircraft. Tempest pilots shot down 638 confirmed V-1 flying bombs, accounting for nearly a third of all those destroyed by aircraft. They would often engage the bombs over the English Channel, using their cannons or even tipping them over with their wings.
Air Superiority: In late 1944 and 1945, the Tempest emerged as one of the few Allied fighters capable of consistently matching and defeating the latest German piston-engine fighters (Fw 190D, Bf 109K) at low level. It also proved deadly against the Messerschmitt Me 262 jet, catching them during landing and takeoff.
Ground Attack: Like the Typhoon before it, the Tempest excelled as a rocket- and bomb-equipped ground-attack aircraft in the final months of the war, terrorizing German transport.
Legacy
While produced in smaller numbers (about 800 Mk.Vs) than the Spitfire or Mustang, the Hawker Tempest Mk.V is regarded by historians as the pinnacle of British piston-engine fighter design. It successfully combined immense power, excellent aerodynamics, and heavy firepower into an aircraft perfectly suited to the final year of the war in Europe. It directly paved the way for the post-war Hawker Sea Fury, one of the fastest piston-engine fighters ever built.
