Fresh from a local estate! Tonight, in separate auctions, I will be listing examples from a small collection of pewter and lead castings of famous historical medals, collected during a Grand Victorian Tour of Europe, in the late 1800's.
The exact age of the casting is unknown, but certainly 1800's or earlier.
Pewter aftercast, in 2 sections (obverse and reverse), of a circa-1666 silver medal attributed to O Muller.
Highly embossed cameo bust of Admiral Michel Adrianzoon de Ruyter (1607-1676) in a doublet and cravat with Order of St Michael, supported by tritons holding a naval crown over his head, trophies behind.
Obverse reads: DE RUYTER DIE DEN BRIT SYN MOET GETEUGELT HEEFT, ALDUS, DOOR MULLERS HANT, INT GOUT EN SILUER LEEFT . AO MDCLXVI DEN XIII IUNY. Translation: De Ruyter, who checked the courage of the English, thus lives in gold and silver by the hand of Muller.
Medal was to commemorate the the Battle of the Four Days.
Measures 74.5mm and 80mm in diameter.
Displays beautifully, unpolished and uncleaned, with original warm patina. Lies flat, with no repairs. Please see large photos for exact condition.
