Part II – Tarawa: Baptism of Fire (1943)

The Battle for Betio and the Costliest 76 Hours
Tarawa, 1943 – WWII Pacific War Photo Archive

483 High-Resolution Scans | Approx. 6.2 GB

This digital photo archive presents 483 high-quality scans of original World War II photographs documenting the Battle of Tarawa, fought between 20 and 23 November 1943. Drawn from original wartime photographic material, the collection provides a detailed, ground-level visual record of one of the most intense and consequential early battles of the Pacific War.

The assault on Betio Island, part of the Tarawa Atoll, marked the U.S. Marine Corps’ first large-scale opposed amphibious landing in the central Pacific. What was expected to take a single day instead became a brutal 76-hour battle, fought against fortified Japanese defences, shallow reefs, exposed beaches, and withering fire at close range.

This archive captures the full operational reality of Tarawa: reef landings under fire, Marines pinned down on open beaches, shattered landing craft, destroyed armour, captured and demolished Japanese fortifications, logistics operations under combat conditions, battlefield medical treatment, and the physical toll of sustained island warfare.

📊 Archive Details

🎓 Historical Context

The Battle of Tarawa resulted in more than 1,000 U.S. Marines killed and over 2,000 wounded in just three days of fighting, shocking the American public and military leadership alike. Japanese losses were almost total. The battle exposed critical flaws in amphibious planning and directly influenced the tactics, equipment, and preparations used in later Pacific landings, including Saipan, Peleliu, and Iwo Jima.

These photographs document not only combat, but the harsh physical and psychological realities of early Pacific island warfare — making this archive an invaluable resource for historians, researchers, educators, authors, documentary producers, and serious collectors.
