Pre-MADONNA: Early Years 1979-1981 is an anthology collection of rare, unreleased recordings from before Madonna's glorious '80s superstardom and major label debut. This compilation chronicles Madonna's career from her early days as an unknown to her success, from her move to New York in 1978 to her major label debut in 1983. CD 1 features seven tracks, including the "Stephen Bray Demo" that secured her a major label contract in 1981, the original versions of "Everybody" and "Burning Up" that appeared on her debut album, and "Ain't No Big Deal," a potential debut single. The collection also includes four demos from her time with her first manager, Camille Barbone, as well as studio recordings from the same period. This collection documents Madonna's transition from rock to dance-pop. CD 2 features recordings from her band days before her solo career, including Emmy and the Emmys, which ended its short-lived run in 1980, and The Breakfast Club, which she first joined as drummer in 1979. Formed by Madonna herself as the leader and guitarist, Emmy and the Emmys featured a raw, new wave/punk-oriented style influenced by Blondie and the Pretenders, and the young Madonna's striking vocals and playing are a must-listen for. When she first joined The Breakfast Club after moving to New York, she initially joined as drummer, but she also recorded original compositions and demos as lead vocalist, providing a rare glimpse into her talent. These recordings, which have previously only been partial or fragmentary, have been newly discovered and have been improved in sound quality. The new release also includes unedited extended recordings and previously unreleased recordings, making this the definitive collector's edition that compiles Madonna's early years, from her days as an unknown to her major label debut.
