When the Austro-Takt was introduced, three express trains were offered as fast daily connections from Vienna to Switzerland in the early 1980s. The "Lake Zurich" train ended in the city of Zurich, which gave it its name.
With the timetable change in May 1987, European Railways introduced the new "EuroCity" train category. These were international rail connections that had to meet specific quality criteria in terms of travel times and rolling stock. Following the change, the express train "Zürichsee" became the Eurocity "Maria Theresia".
