This product is a rare and unique 19th century Malay silver betel tobacco box, known as a 'Chelpa'. The box features intricate repousse patterns and is octagonal in shape, adding to its historical and decorative value. Of Octagonal form, known as a 'chelpa', constructed from beaten sheet silver. This example is of a form associated with Dutch and other European colonial / trade influences, the shape derived from the 'pair-cased' pocket watch - a form admired by the Malay craftsmen.
The surface is finished with chiseled and chased floral scroll from decoration. A stylised flower head embellishes the cover face.
