VTG "VICTORIA WARE IRONSTONE" 1800'S CITY SCENE PITCHER HEAVY ORNATE COBALT BLUE & FLOW BLUE LOOK 12' TALL
According to what I've found, there was no ironstone made with the Victorian Ware Ironstone mark long ago, but this company is certainly trying to emulate this era. The name certainly attracts attention and a timeless feel. On this particular piece that is what is stamped on the bottom, but it's difficult to read because the stamp is actually backwards.
It's believed these beautiful pieces were made in the mid 20th Century and probably in China by multiple companies to emulate the LOOK of the 19th Century ironstone and flow blue pieces. That doesn't take away from its very awesome look and pristine condition. There are many different serving pieces made which you can find online with this stamp, although this large, heavy pitcher is more difficult to find.
This big and bold pitcher would add a look of magnificent richness to any room. I could also see it being used to hold things, since it is heavy it wouldn't easily tip over. Just a couple of ideas might be as a utensil holder in the kitchen, fingertip towel holders in the bathroom, a lovely arrangement in a dining room, sunroom, front porch or any living space, treat holder for our special family members, etc. However, it's so heavy, I'm not sure it'd be easy to lift filled with liquid. It has a great old farmhouse look.
It is very heavy like ironstone and it says ironstone, but I don't think it is, maybe ceramic instead..
The scene is that of an 1800's Victorian City, most likely in England or another European city, but the piece is most likely not made there.
Its cobalt blue scalloped rim and base add to its uniqueness, giving it the LOOK of flow blue pieces that are highly collected.
Everything about this pitcher is voluptuous, even the spout and handle.
As I said above, this piece is in pristine condition with no chips, cracks, crazing, repairs or evidence of ever having been owned or used. The scene itself is in blurred flow blue imitation, although you can still make out the various things portrayed. The name, "Victoria Ware Ironstone," is actually stamped backwards. It does have two area pictured in the last photo where the glaze didn't take when originally made.
BEFORE PACKING so it arrives safely from us to you, it is approximately 12" tall and 11" at its widest and weighs about 8 pounds.
