Up for sale is an 1872 U.S. Three Cent Nickel graded PCGS XF40. This classic post Civil War era coin features Lady Liberty on the obverse and a Roman numeral “III” in wreath on the reverse. It displays moderate overall wear on high points, with clear date and design details still visible — typical for an extra fine example. A solid addition to any early American type set or 3‑cent nickel collection.

Why It Was Created

The Three-Cent Nickel was introduced in 1865, right after the Civil War. During the war, gold, silver, and even copper coins vanished from circulation as people hoarded precious metals. The U.S. Mint needed a durable, low-value coin made from base metals to keep commerce moving.

At the same time, postage stamps dropped to three cents, making a three-cent coin especially practical.
