How to Replace a Power Steering Rack：

• Place the wheels in the straight-ahead position. The steering wheel should be in the neutral position. Remove the key from the ignition and make sure the steering wheel is locked. Do not turn the steering wheel while the rack is being removed. Doing so may cause the spiral cable in the steering wheel to loosen and become useless.
• Loosen all wheel nuts and raise and support the vehicle using jack stands.
• Remove both front wheels. Remove the steering shaft coupling outer seal and loosen the upper hold-down bolt on the steering shaft coupling assembly.
• Remove the outer tie rod end. You may need to use a special tie rod end puller to remove it, do not tap the tie rod end itself.
• Remove all parts that require access to the frame mounting bolts, lines, and steering coupling.
• Remove the power steering rack mounting bolts, or disconnect the power steering high pressure and return lines. It may be easier to wiggle the power steering pipe fitting with a wrench after removing the rack bolts and moving it a little.
• Place the drain pan under the vehicle and remove the hydraulic power steering pressure hose and power steering return hose from the power steering rack.
• Twist, rotate and shake it out through the wheel well opening.
• If the new rack has new tie rod ends, measure the overall length of the old rack and tie rod assembly. Set the overall length of the new assembly to the same measurement by twisting the tie rod ends onto the threads. Keep the rack centered as you do this and split the overlap difference between the left and right rod ends, otherwise the steering wheel will be off-center when you are finished.
• If you are reusing the old tie rod ends, loosen the lock nuts. Count how many turns it takes to remove the tie rod ends.
• Install the new rack using the same words you used to take the new rack out.
• Reconnect the power steering lines, using new "O" rings if necessary. Usually, the high pressure lines use a slightly larger "O" ring, so be careful not to mix them up.
• Reconnect the steering shaft coupling assembly and bolt the rack in place.
• Reinstall the tie rod ends onto the steering knuckle. Secure the slotted nut with a new cotter pin; never reuse the old cotter pin.
• Put the wheel back on and tighten the nut to the specified torque.
• Remove the return line from the power steering pump and place the end in a bucket.
• Top up the power steering pump and start the engine until clean fluid flows from the return line. You can install an inline filter in the return line to protect the new rack Align the front end to reset the toe adjustment to spec, otherwise the vehicle will handle poorly and the tires will wear quickly.
