A charming pair of vintage hand-painted ceramic clown trinket boxes, each uniquely designed with bright circus-themed colours and cheerful detailing.
The taller clown measures approximately 10cm tall and plays a violin. The trinket compartment is hidden beneath the belt — the top half lifts off cleanly to reveal a small interior pot. This one is in good vintage condition with no damage.
The smaller clown measures approximately 7.5cm tall and balances a colourful striped ball on his knees. The ball opens into a trinket compartment; however, the hinged lid has come away from the base. It still balances neatly in place for display but is no longer functional as a hinged box.
Both pieces are hand-painted with glossy glazes, likely made in Japan or Taiwan circa 1960s–1970s, when whimsical clown and circus ceramics were especially popular as ornaments and novelty giftware. The style is reminiscent of Lefton or Napco imports from this period.
Condition:
• Tall clown: very good, no cracks or chips, minor age wear
• Smaller clown: damaged hinge, top balances in place, otherwise displays well
• Hand-painted with some light paint wear
Measurements:
