DATE PRINTED: c.1751. The map was first published in c.1755 and re-issued until c.1795. The only change in this period is the imprint. This example bears the John Hinton imprint. Hinton was the original publisher who produced the series from 1749 and who sold his share of the projection in 1752 to John Tinney.
SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 68 x 51.5 cm, 26.75 x 20.25 inches (large) with a centre fold as issued.
ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Drawn by Thomas Kitchin, who with Emanual Bowen produced all of the maps in this publication. Thomas Kitchin (or Kitchen) (1718–1784) was an English engraver and cartographer. He was born in Southwark, and was apprenticed to Emmanuel Bowen in 1732, with whom he collaborated for 30 years. He was appointed Hydrographer to the King in 1773. His large and varied output has been attributed to his willingness to copy the maps of other cartographers.
PROVENANCE: A plate published in "The Large English Atlas". The work was the first large scale atlas of English counties since the works of Blaeu and Jansson a century earlier and was based on the latest surveys available. The maps were a long time in preparation, beginning in 1749 and reaching completion of 45 plates in 1760. The engraving work was mostly shared between Thomas Kitchin and Emanuel Bowen. During this time the plates passed through the hands of several publishers and were issued individually and in part works without title.
