Full titled and subtitled, The Horse, A New Edition With Numerous Illustrations. Together With A General History Of The Horse; A Dissertation on the American Trotting Horse, How Trained and Jockeyed, an Account of His Remarkable Performances; and an Essay on the Ass and the Mule by J.S. Skinner.  First published in 1843, this is a later 1856 publication by Blanchard and Lea.  Overall in GOOD CONDITION, and I would grade it better save for light to moderate page foxing throughout.  Embossed cloth boards with lightly rubbed gilt spine titling and decoration.  Boards with moderate edge wear, moderate to heavy corner wear, loss of cloth top and bottom of spine.  A few previous owner marks on the first free endpapers shown in listing photos, a few hand drawings of horse heads on back endpapers in pencil (not shown, could be erased).  448 clean and solidly bound pages with B&W illustrations throughout, ending with a 16-page publisher ad section.
