1943 Run — “Practical Mathematics: Theory and Practice with Military and Industrial Applications”

A set of twelve (12) 1943 issues of Practical Mathematics, edited by Reginald Stevens Kimball, Ed.D., and published by Nelson Doubleday, Inc. during the height of World War II. Volume II & XII missing.

These digest-sized wartime instructional magazines were part of a serialized mathematics course designed to teach applied arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry for use in military, engineering, and industrial training programs. The series was published three times per month, totaling 250 lectures across the run, and was used by both civilian defense workers and soldiers in technical training.

Each issue measures approximately 9 × 6 inches and contains 50–60 pages. Topics include:

• Basic Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry

• Industrial applications in machining, navigation, and gunnery

• Mathematical puzzles, tables, and self-tests

• “Strange Ways with Numbers” and other WWII-era applied math articles

Condition

• All 12 issues intact, tight bindings, and all pages present

• Light yellowing from age; consistent with 1940s pulp stock

• No writing or markings inside

• Noticeable darkened/charred spot along top page edges (see photos) — possibly mild burn or heavy age toning; does not affect readability or binding
