The ET 403 series express rail cars experienced a second heyday when they were leased to Lufthansa, which was trying to make its still unprofitable short-haul flights between Düsseldorf, Cologne and Frankfurt profitable. The rail cars were in use for Lufthansa until 1993. Excessive costs for the upcoming overhaul put an end to operations. The technical design of the ET403 allowed a free composition and therefore based on the needs of the different units. Units of two to six parts could be formed. Furthermore, the multiple units were also driven in double traction. LS Models took into account all changes made for the conversion to the Lufthansa variant when implementing them in the model.
