Steam locomotive series 44 of the Austrian Federal Railways (BBÖ).

■ Medium drive axles with smaller wheel edges
■ Clear view between boiler and frame
■ Use in heavy freight train service

With the expansion of the Passau-Wels line by 20 tons of axle pressure, the powerful three-cylinder locomotives of the series 44 could also be used in Austria from 1938. They were indispensable for the particularly long, heavy block trains from West Germany to the Linz steelworks. Ore trains from Hieflau were also transported from Amstetten to Linz. After World War II, some locomotives continued to operate. Due to extensive maintenance, however, they were soon shut down.
