The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) purchased, between 1934 and 1936, the large diesel railcars of the VT 42 class which were based on the design of the VT 41 class diesel railcars. The vehicles had powerful engines (210 hp) and reached a top speed of 110 km/h. After the war, ÖBB used these rolling stock under the designation 5042. The railcars were used in express and other trains mainly on the Viennese Westbahn lines. For the progressive electrification of the main lines, the railcars of the 5042 class have spent their last years of service on the secondary lines of Lower Austria.
