Cernăuți is the Romanian name for the city of Chernivtsi, which was at various times part of Austria-Hungary, Romania, the USSR, and now Ukraine.

Max Sternschein Studied in Berlin with his sister Grete, mastered art photography. Upon returning to Chernivtsi, he opened his own studio, becoming famous as a theater and ballet photographer
In the address book of Chernivtsi in 1936, the photographer's studio is listed as:
Sternschein Max, Strada Regina Maria 17 - with an advertisement "Fotografii după ultima noutate" ("photographs according to the latest innovation")
In Chernivtsi periodicals, his name was listed among the leading photographers of the city.
Married to Suzi, had two children - daughter Anni and son Vili
During the Soviet occupation (1940) Anni was sent to Bessarabia, where she died after the German-Romanian occupation
After the war, Max with Suzi and their son emigrated to Buenos Aires, where he cut precious stones; he died there in the late 1950s
