In March 1941, Bulgaria entered into an alliance with Nazi Germany, receiving the territories of Greek Thrace and Yugoslav Macedonia, which also had Jewish populations. Following Germany's example, the Bulgarian government promulgated racist laws against its Jewish citizens. Although these laws were not fully enforced, Bulgarian authorities deported Jewish men to forced labor camps set up throughout the country, and from mid-1942 onwards, they were required to wear the Star of David. In early 1943, the government agreed to Germany's demand to deport the Jews of Thrace and Macedonia to death camps in Poland, and prepared for the first deportation of Jewish citizens of Bulgaria itself. A group of parliamentarians, church leaders, and public figures, as well as many ordinary citizens, united and forced the Bulgarian Tsar and government to abandon the deportations
