CHAMBON- BROWN LEATHER & ROPE

PRE-OWNED

Description

A chambon is a horse training aid used primarily for lunging to encourage the horse to stretch its head and neck down and forward, developing correct topline muscles (back, neck, haunches) and a relaxed, swinging back, especially beneficial for horses with undeveloped musculature or in rehabilitation, working through a system of poll and mouth pressure released by the horse's correct downward stretch, not for ridden work.

How it works

Pressure/Release System: The chambon runs from the girth, through the horse's legs, up to the bridle, and clips to the bit.

Poll Pressure: When the horse raises its head too high, pressure is applied to the poll (the poll of the head) and the corners of the mouth.

Encourages Stretch: The horse learns to lower its head to release this uncomfortable pressure, stretching its neck long and low.

Develops Muscles: This action engages the back, abdominal, and haunch muscles, improving the horse's topline and engagement.

When to use it

Lunging/Free Schooling: Best used when lunging to develop correct movement before or alongside ridden work.

Rehabilitation: Helpful for horses recovering from injuries that affect their back.

Hollow-Backed Horses: Ideal for horses that brace and carry their heads too high, locking their back muscles.

Important considerations

Not for Riding (Generally): It's a lunging aid, not for use under saddle for most, though some advanced trainers may use it carefully for ridden work after extensive lungeing.

Proper Adjustment: Must be fitted correctly and initially adjusted loosely; it's a tool for teaching, not forcing, a frame.

Warm-Up First: Always warm the horse up without the chambon before applying.
