🔧 How to Fit Your Stove Rope – Step-by-Step Guide

Replacing your stove rope is a straightforward task that can dramatically improve your stove’s efficiency and safety. Follow these detailed instructions to ensure a clean, secure fit.

1. Remove the Stove Door

Begin by removing the stove door. Depending on your stove model, this can be done in one of three ways:

  • Simply lift the door off its hinges

  • Push the hinge pins upward to release the door

  • Unscrew any bolts securing the door in place

Once removed, lay the door flat on a clean, stable surface. Be aware that the door may be sooty or dusty, so protect your workspace accordingly.

2. Remove the Glass and Old Rope

Using a screwdriver, carefully unscrew the clips that hold the stove glass in place. Lift the glass out gently and set it aside. Next, remove the old rope seal from the outer edge of the door. If your kit includes a glass seal rope, remove the existing glass seal as well. If you're only replacing the main door rope, leave the glass seal intact.

3. Measure and Cut the New Rope

Take your new rope and measure it against the groove in the stove door. Cut it to size, leaving a small amount of extra length to ensure a snug fit. This extra bit helps avoid gaps and ensures a continuous seal.

4. Apply the Adhesive

Wearing gloves, apply a thin, even line of Rope Fix adhesive around the entire groove where the rope will sit. Be careful not to get glue on your clothes or skin, and avoid contact with your eyes. Start at the bottom centre of the door and press the rope firmly into the groove, working your way around. Once you reach the end, trim the rope to fit and press the final section into place, ensuring the entire rope is seated securely.

5. Replace the Glass Seal (if applicable)

If you're also replacing the glass seal, repeat the same process in the groove around the glass area. Once the rope is fitted, gently place the glass back into position, ensuring it sits centrally. Reinsert the clips and screws by hand, then tighten them with a screwdriver. Take care not to overtighten, as this can crack the glass.

6. Final Steps and Curing

With the rope and glass securely in place, allow the adhesive to cure for at least 12 hours before using your stove. Once dry, reattach the door to your stove. You should notice an immediate improvement in heat retention and overall stove performance.

About The Stove Wizard

The Stove Wizard began as a father-and-daughter venture in a North Wales garage in 2010 — hand-packing ceramic coals with care, grit and a bit of stubborn spark. Over the years, we’ve grown into a nationally recognised name in fireplace styling — trusted by home renovators, boutique designers and major film sets alike. Every item we sell reflects our values: practical craftsmanship, long-lasting quality, and a personal touch you won’t find from mass-manufactured brands. We’re still proudly family-run, still flame-obsessed, and still packing every order like it’s our very first.

If being used with a Bio Ethanol fire — as with ALL bio ethanol fires — you CANNOT put anything in the flame, or it will no longer be a clean burn. These must be placed around the fuel reservoir. If they are placed over the flame you may get black smoke.

We do not sell coals, pebbles or logs for any individual fires as each company has their own spares usually available. Our coals, pebbles and logs are direct from a UK RCF manufacturer and often are the exact product that would have been supplied with the fire, however due to the warranty offered by the fire manufacturers they will only recommend spares purchased directly from themselves. The products on offer are not designed to fit specific fires, although they have been found to be suitable for a wide range of gas fires. The Stove Wizard is not responsible for any loss of warranty caused by their use. We take no responsibility for any damage to the fire that may be caused by improper installation of our products.
