ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Drawn by Thomas Kitchin. Thomas Kitchin (or Kitchen) (1718–1784) was an English engraver and cartographer. He was born in Southwark, and was apprenticed to Emmanuel Bowen in 1732, with whom he collaborated for 30 years. He was appointed Hydrographer to the King in 1773. His large and varied output has been attributed to his willingness to copy the maps of other cartographers. He worked for a number of publishers including Dalrymple, Dunn, Luttrell, Mackenzie & Wildey.
PROVENANCE: First published in "The London Magazine." The London Magazine is the title of six different publications that have appeared in succession since 1732. All six have focused on the arts, literature and poetry. A number of Nobel Laureates, including Annie Ernaux, Albert Camus, Doris Lessing and Nadine Gordimer have been published in its pages. It is England's oldest literary journal. This example was published in "Historical descriptions of...England and Wales." by Henry Boswell, c.1786.
