This is an empty canister that originally held 48 Crayola Crayons.   When the 48 color crayon set was introduced in the 1940's they were oringially in a rectangular box.  In the mid 50's Crayola switched to a round canister for a few years.   These are quite rare and would make an excellent addition to your collection.
