1949 Press Photo Vincent Auriol, President of France with Family - sax02857

This is an original press photo. Vincent Auriol "rode into French politics on a bicycle" in 1914 and 32 years later became president of the Fourth Republic. In the intervening years he had gained the reputation of being a political peacemaker. But he did not make peace with Henri Philippe Petain's Vichyites after fall of Franc in World War II. Petain became premier of France in June of 1940 and immediately capitulated to the on-rushing Germans. Then he became chief of state of a puppet government at Vichy when the Germans occupied Paris. Auriol, who as a member of the Chamber of Deputies had voted against giving him plenary powers, was confined in what was described as administrative internment. Photo measures 9.5 x 7.5 inches. Photo is dated 05-15-1949.

Part Number: sax02857
