Description:
A lot of 18 original black and white photographs capturing daily life in New Orleans in the early 1920s. These candid, street-level scenes offer a rare, documentary-style glimpse into a bygone era of the Crescent City—well before modern development transformed its landscape.
Subjects include:
• Tulane University with a horse and buggy parked in front
• A baseball tryout sign reading “Play Ball” in front of a car, pointing to the Dauphine Theater
• African American dock workers at the riverside
• A beautiful sidewheel steamboat docked on the Mississippi River
• The iconic Cabildo at 701 Chartres Street (2 copies)
• A bustling French Market scene (2 copies)
• The Palace Theater and vintage trolley cars
• Atmospheric views of a New Orleans cemetery
• Classic 1920s cars, architecture, and tree-lined boulevards
Condition:
This lot includes 16 unique photographs and 2 duplicates (Cabildo and French Market). Most photos measure 4.5” x 3”, with a few larger at 5.5” x 4”. Several prints show typical wear consistent with age: light bending, turned corners, faint creases, and minor edge chipping. Some exhibit light fading or silvering near the edges, adding to their period authenticity. Writing on backs says New Orleans- no date, but based on the cars it’s circa early 1920s.
