The "LIGHT LENS LAB 50mm f/1.5 Z21" is a special model that reimagines the legendary French lens “Angenieux 50mm F1.5 Type S21” using modern optical technology and new materials. The “Z” in Z21 stands for Zhou, the lead designer, and symbolizes the continuation of the spirit of the original S21 developers.

This lens retains the classic double-Gauss optical formula, while re-engineering its design to faithfully recreate the distinctive exterior of the original S21. It delivers a soft yet solid rendering, reminiscent of vintage masterpieces. Instead of solely pursuing high resolution, LIGHT LENS LAB focused on the artistic aspects of photography—such as bokeh and the beauty of optical aberrations.

While many manufacturers strive to eliminate aberrations, this lens intentionally preserves them. This choice reflects both a deep understanding of optics and a bold artistic vision, resulting in a “poetic light” that cannot be quantified by numbers alone.

Classic looks and refined handling — finished in premium "Piano Black"

The lens features a classically inspired exterior, with meticulous attention given to the helicoid and aperture ring mechanics for a refined tactile experience. Combining the historical aesthetics of the original S21 with modern usability, this lens also boasts a luxurious “Piano Black” finish—a high-gloss surface that requires advanced manufacturing techniques. Its lustrous appearance enhances the joy and satisfaction of ownership.

Blending original charm with modern performance

Using professional measurement tools, the lens was fine-tuned to closely replicate the original S21’s signature rendering based on historical documents and sample images. At the same time, optical performance has been improved—particularly within the central 30% of the frame, which now surpasses the original by approximately 10%.

New materials and design for enhanced image quality

The entire optical system uses the latest optical glass, with coatings optimized using modern technology. This allows for increased sharpness and contrast, while maintaining the soft tones and unique bokeh reminiscent of the S21. Peripheral light falloff has also been slightly improved, offering more natural edge rendering.

Larger image circle for flexible usage

The image circle has been designed larger than the original, making it suitable for use on sensors up to 44×33mm without vignetting in close-to-mid focus ranges.
