A pair of large Japanese Emperor and Empress dolls, or
kokin-bina, presented in formal court dress. The empress’ attire is of fine brocade silks, no headress. Both
dolls have gofun faces and hands, which are in excellent condition. The
emperor has a long sword with shagreen tsuka (handle) and traditional black
hat. Meiji period, c. 1868-1912. Emperor is marked on base with a signature.
CONDITION: Fabrics are in fair condition for
both dolls; there is some scattered fragility with some fabric . No bases which reflects the price as these antique dolls fetch high prices.
DIMENSIONS: With
accessories, the emperor is 10 inches in height and 14 inches width. empress is 9 inches in height and 12 inches width.
