Description
A bronze medal associated with the German team's trials for the cancelled 1916 Berlin Olympic Games. This medal was given to triallists who won a place in the Olympic team. Unusually though this example bears an inscription indicating that it was awarded at an event in 1918 (so perhaps an unused spare at the Olympic trials?). I would say that it was in extremely fine (EF) condition or close to it, but please take a good look at my photographs and form your own opinion of its grade. There is no case.
Made from Bronze, Diameter 50 mm, Weight 52.4 grams.
The obverse has a profile of Kaiser Wilhelm II in full military dress facing right. The reverse has the legend "DEM SIEGER IM OLYMPIA PRÜFUNGSKAMPF" (To the victor in the Olympic Trials) above a laurel branch. Around the periphery is the legend "DEUTSCHER REICHSAUSSCHUSS FÜR OLYMPISCHE SPIELE" (German National Committee for Olympic Games). At the top is the inscription "29. 9. 1918".
This medal is often collected by collectors of Olympic Participation Medals, in the absence of an official OPM for the 1916 Olympics. Berlin was selected as the host city for the 1916 Olympics at the 14th Session of the IOC in Stockholm in July 1912. At the outbreak of war in 1914 it was assumed that hostilities would be over by 1916 and preparations for the Games continued, including the holding of trials for the German Olympic team and the issuing of this medal. Eventually of course the Games had to be cancelled.
