Armstrong Whitley played an important role in the early stages of World War II during the Royal Air Force Bomber Command's bombing campaign against Gennai, and was one of the three "strategic bombers" that Britain entered the war in September 1939. Its partners were Hampden of Handley Page and Wellington of Vickers Armstrong, both of which were originally designed as daytime bombers to replace the old models of the Royal Air Force's medium bomber squadron. They were two years earlier than the Whitley, which was designed from the beginning as a heavy night bomber to replace the old Vickers Virginia and Handley Page Hayford biplanes, as well as the Royal Air Force's first single wing night bomber, the Hendon with fixed landing gear.
