Tracing the History of Somdej Phra Buddhacarya
Somdej To
Tracing the History of Somdej Phra Buddhacarya, I believe that many people have heard the name of a famous monk since the Ayutthaya period until the present, or as many people call him, Somdej To, Luang Pu To, Luang Pho To of Wat Rakhang Khositaram. And today, the admin would like to take everyone to get to know Somdej To, a famous monk who practiced until reaching the highest level of Vipassana meditation. He was also the one who discovered the Chinnabanchon mantra, a prayer that can protect against all dangers in all 10 directions. What is the background?
History of Somdej To Phra Phutthachan
Somdej To Phra Phutthachan To Phromrangsi, originally named To, was born during the reign of King Rama I (7 years after the establishment of Rattanakosin) on Thursday, the 12th waxing moon of the 5th month, Year of the Monkey, Chula Sakarat 1150. His mother was an ordinary villager named Ngud Kes. As for his father, there is no clear evidence. It is said that when he was young, he was frail. In order to suppress his name, the adults gave him the opposite name and gave him the name To. He lived in Ban Tambon Kai Chon (Tha Luang), Tha Ruea District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province. He passed away on Saturday, the 2nd waning moon of the 8th month, Year of the Monkey, Chula Sakarat 1234, which corresponds to June 22, 1872, at the age of 85. He held the position of abbot of Wat Rakhang Khositaram for 20 years, assuming the position at the age of 65 and holding the title of Somdej To for more than 7 years.
At the age of 13, he was ordained as a novice at Wat Yai Muang Phichit and moved to study Buddhist scriptures in Chai Nat until he was 18 years old, then he moved to study with Ajahn Kaew at Wat Bang Lamphu, Bangkok. He also studied Buddhist scriptures with Sian Traduang, Khun Phrom Sena, Plaat Sena, Plaat Kromnut, Sian Bun, and Phra Krasae until he came to pay respects to His Royal Highness Prince Adison Sunthon, the Crown Prince, who ordered him to come and stay with the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand at Wat Mahathat.
Later in the year 2351, when he was 21 years old, he was ordained as a monk and His Royal Highness the Prince took on the responsibility of ordaining him as a royal novice and had him ordain at his hometown where his mother and relatives lived at Wat Takrai, Phitsanulok Province. He traveled to various places according to his nature of liking to search for new knowledge, aiming to study and find various teachers who were skilled in Vipassana meditation and Samatha by going on pilgrimage into the forests and mountains.
Until he achieved the highest level of Vipassana meditation, he had Somdej Phra Sangkharat Suk Kai Theun as his teacher, who constantly taught Somdej Toh various knowledge and skills until Somdej Toh became proficient in every aspect. At that time, Somdej Phra Sangkharat Suk Kai Theun created the Wat Phlap Somdej amulets and blessed them himself, which allowed Somdej Toh to gain knowledge in creating amulets. Not long after, Somdej Toh moved to become the abbot of Wat Rakhang.
During the reign of King Rama IV, he was very fond of Phra Maha To. Until in 2395, he granted the ecclesiastical title of Phra Maha To for the first time. He held the position of abbot of Wat Rakhang Khositaram at the age of 64 and was a royal monk as Phra Thammakiti. Normally, Phra Maha To would try to avoid receiving the royal ecclesiastical title, but because the King was a prince at that time, he could not avoid it and was forced to accept the rank of Somdet, so he had to accept the ecclesiastical title for another 2 years. However, if he were a prince, Somdet To could escape and did not accept the rank by going on a pilgrimage for several months to escape the rank. Later, he was promoted to the rank of a senior royal monk as Phra Thep Krawi. Ten years later, in 2470, His Majesty graciously bestowed the ecclesiastical title of Somdet Phra Rajakhana as Somdet Phra Phutthachan, with the royal title as inscribed on the gold certificate as Somdet Phra Phutthachan Aneksathanpricha. Visuddhasilacharyasombat, Nippatthutkhun, Sirisunthonphrotcharik, Aranyikakanisorn, the great monk, Tripitakakoson, Wimolsilakhan, located at Wat Rakhang Khositaram Woramahawihan, Royal Monastery.
At that time, many strange events occurred, some unexpected and funny. For example, a foreigner heard the news that Somdej Toh was very talented and intelligent, so he wanted to test his wisdom to find out where the center of the world was. Somdej Toh replied that the center of the world was everywhere on the surface of the world. No matter where I stood, that was the center of the world. The foreigner then asked if he could prove it. Somdej replied that if I could prove it, what would you say? The foreigner did not say anything. After that, Somdej Toh held a palm leaf fan and picked up a sacred thread instead of a rope to tie to the palm leaf fan and stuck it in the ground. He then pulled out the sacred thread and used his fingertip to draw a circle on the ground. He said, “The circle is the world. Therefore, I am standing at the center of the world, right where the palm leaf fan is stuck in the ground.”
When the foreigners heard this, they gave up and went back. There were many other stories that Somdej Toh could tell the future. Once, a Chinese woman came to ask him for lottery numbers by secretly making an appointment with a temple boy and suggested that she go up and talk to Somdej Toh in his hut. Then the temple boy asked Somdej Toh while he was massaging her, “Grandpa, Grandpa, what will the lottery numbers be this time?” Somdej Toh replied, “I can’t tell you, or my lottery numbers will slip through the cracks.” At that time, there was a Chinese uncle hiding under the hut. When he heard Somdej Toh say that, he immediately opened the door.
Another legend that has been passed down is about Mae Nak. Somdej Toh, Phra Buddhacarya Toh, learned about the event where the ghost of Nang Nak was acting up and no shaman could deal with it. So he traveled to stay at Wat Mahabut in Khlong Phra Khanong. In the evening, he sat at the mouth of the hole and called Nang Nak up to talk to her. However, they didn’t know what they agreed on. In the end, Somdej Toh was able to drill and take the bone from Nang Nak’s forehead that he had buried. Then he sat and polished it until it was shiny, then took it back to Wat Rakhang and had a yantra inscribed on it, pierced it into a shape to wear around the waist to carry with him wherever he went. Since then, the ghost of the Naga woman has disappeared and has not come to haunt people again.
