This is an authentic hanging scroll by Nakabayashi Chikkei (1816–1867), a distinguished late-Edo period painter known for his refined landscapes. The artwork depicts a serene waterfall in a mountainous setting, showcasing Chikkei’s exceptional skill in combining realism with the poetic elegance of Southern School painting (Nanshūga).
Nakabayashi Chikkei, born in Kyoto, was the eldest son of Nakabayashi Chikudo and a student of Yamamoto Baiitsu. Known by various names such as Gakakyoshi and Gingorō, Chikkei was renowned for his detailed and realistic landscapes. At the age of 25, he opened his own studio in Kyoto, where he developed friendships with notable artists like Yoshida Kōkin and Hineno Taizan. Chikkei passed away in 1867 at the age of 52.
This piece is a testament to Chikkei’s mastery and serves as a valuable addition to collections of Japanese art or historical artifacts.
