In the movie, "Top Gun", Iceman and his RIO, Slider, are a formidable duo flying the F-14 Tomcat. Iceman, known for his cool precision, is Maverick's primary rival at the Navy's Fighter Weapons School. The F-14, is central to the film's intense dogfights. Iceman and Slider's teamwork in the F-14 highlights the aircraft's advanced capabilities. Despite their rivalry, Iceman and Maverick develop mutual respect, especially after they successfully engage enemy MiGs in the film's climactic battle, showcasing the F-14's role in their victory. In the movie, Iceman and Slider fly with a fictionalized version of squadron VF-213 that uses the "Fist of the Fleet" insignia from the real life squadron, VFA-25 for cinematic effect.


Grumman F-14A Tomcat

Designed to carry the formidable long range AIM-54 Phoenix missile, the Grumman F-14 Tomcat was first flown on December 21st, 1970. Made famous by the Hollywood film Top Gun, the F-14 replaced the F-4 Phantom II as the US Navy's primary maritime air superiority fighter. Its design includes a variable geometry wing that can sweep back for high speed supersonic intercepts and forward for improved positioning in air to air dogfights. Nicknamed "Bombcat," the F-14 spent much of its late career in an air-to-ground role, carrying the Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night (LANTIRN) system.
