With a picturesque scene depicting tiny figures in a landscape with an abbey building framed by a ruined, 

Ivy-clad Norman archway. This has been beautifully rendered in delicate, highly 

accomplished, penwork. Indeed, I  had to check very carefully to confirm

that it is not a transfer image, nor an overpainted pasted print.

  

Unusually this has been married with sides of black and natural coloured straw work woven into a 

decorative lozenge pattern. I cannot find any other examples of such a combination of 

the two disciplines though it is very successful here.

All applied to lightweight wood. The lid is detached and was never hinged. The inside 

has been painted an attractive coral colour. The base is a glossy black lacquer

 

Difficult to date. It has a Regency look - possibly an early 19th century prisoner-of-war piece?

In good antique condition with no significant losses or damage.
