Good Condition. This is a rare 3 page stampless letter dated Feb 14, 1843 that was written and signed by Charles Timothy Brooks, (June 20, 1813 - June 14, 1883). Brooks was a noted American translator of German works, a poet, a transcendentalist and a Unitarian Pastor. He is writing from Mobile Alabama to a "dear friend and fellow laborer", William A. Durfee of Newport R.I. He mentions how his congregation is growing, and the cause of liberal Christanity looks bright again, etc. He states that the issue of slavery is heavy upon him and he is, "Satisfied...that a great many slaveholders would be very glad to free them if the north would pay half the loss, which our northern ancestors helped create." His wife was in Newport at the time. Letter 7.75 x 9.75". 2nd page has chip (see photo).
Notes: Brooks served as a preacher in various New England towns until he became pastor of the Unitarian church in Newport RI on June 4, 1837, where he remained until his death. William A. Durfee (1814 - 1876) was the son of Benjamin Durfee and Sarah Cook.
