Trilobite

Featured in this listing is a trilobite diacalymene trilobite, as seen in the photographs. The specimen depicted is the exact one you will receive. This particular specimen was found in Morocco in the Ktauoua Formation. They are a common entry level fossil for collectors, and probably an essential one for anyone who collects fossils, especially trilobites.

Diacalymene trilobites are Paleozoic marine arthropods, diacalymene lived during the Ordovician to Silurian periods, approximately 485 to 419 million years ago. These trilobites are renowned for their distinctive exoskeleton, which featured a well-defined cephalon (head) and a segmented thorax that ended in a smooth, semi-circular pygidium (tail).

Diacalymene trilobites were equipped with moderately complex eyes, which allowed them to detect predators and navigate through different environments—both critical abilities in the often-turbulent ancient seas. Their bodies were covered in a hard calcite shell which could also enroll, similar to Phacops, forming a protective shield against potential threats.

Their fossils are commonly found in various regions around the world, indicating a widespread distribution and suggesting that they were highly successful and adaptable marine organisms. The abundance and preservation of their fossils provide valuable insights into the marine ecosystems of their time, illustrating the extensive biodiversity and the dynamic environmental conditions of the Paleozoic seas. These fossils continue to be a key source of data for scientists studying the evolutionary history and ecological dynamics of early marine life.
