Moldavite
For sale in this listing is a specimen of Moldavite. Moldavite is a rare form of tektite found in parts of Germany, Austria and Czechia (formerly known as the Czech Republic).
Tektites are formed from molten sand as the result of meteorite impacts, and the distinctive green colouring of moldavite is caused by the particular composition of iron, aluminium oxides and manganese that was present in the area of the Nordlinger Ries crater which was formed by the meteorite impact some 14.8 million years ago.
Moldavite has been exploited for decorative purposes since as far back as the neolithic, and its value has steadily increased as deposits have dwindled. At some point reserves of this unique material will be exhausted entirely.
