This is an antique Ink well with tray. (the bottle will come off the tray by lifting it out of the tray well it fits perfectly into)
Tray measures: 7-1/2" long with handle by 6" wide. bottle is 3-3/4" tall by 3" wide.
This is from the late 1800's. It has 2 hallmarks on it both from the same time period. I believe it was assembled either in New York or London.
~The hallmark on the bottle cap is for the late 1800's for the company John Walter Barnard in London. He used his typical pillar decor on the silver lid you see on lots of his silver. It matches the Crystal bottle perfectly with the deeply cut Swirled Pillar Tusks. The bottle does fluoresce an apple green in 365 uv light indicating it has Manganese for a clarifying agent. This color typically is found in American Cut glass from the 1800's as the London glass tends not to fluoresce like this. So I am not sure if the glass was sourced in America or London. J W B is known for making Inkwells using this same cap, and always set into trays with metal fitters.
~However this second Hallmark on the bottom of the Tray is for E.G. Webster. This is from the same time frame but an American mark as E G Webster was located in NY. The tray is Quadruple silver plate. But there is a perfect metal ring attached to the center that fits the metal ring on the bottle perfectly.
In conclusion, The Ink bottle and cap were assembled by John Water Barnard in London and are of high quality. I think at some point the original tray may have been another and this one was fitted as a replacement. Otherwise E.G. Webster sourced the silver caps and/or entire bottle from John Walter Barnard, then assembled on their trays. Or a very good jeweler matched the the 2 pieces perfectly a short time after.
John Walter Barnard is possibly the earliest known to exist Silversmith company today.
Condition Notes: The bottle itself is in great condition. Inside is clear and clean and there are no chips, cracks or fractures on the glass, and the metal mountings are firm and secure. The bottom tray has minor age scratching in the finish on top and bottom. And the top side has possibly some micro pitting in the Finish but it's not peeling or coming off.. Any discoloration you see would tarnish and does polish off
