The A-side of this gorgeously-pressed French 12" 45rpm is "Hey Joe" the original 1974 recording that was Patti Smith's first recording ever. The B-side is a LONG (15:40!) live free-form version of "Radio Ethiopia" recorded in 1977 at CBGB.

As far as I know there's no other release of the live side, and boy is it worth having. It's magic. But so is the A-side, not just because it's a wonderful artifact of her early soul, and not just because it's a great song and performance, but because this is the most dynamic and alive and electric format to hear it in. Bless the inventor of the 12" 45, whoever it was.

And bless Patti, forever.
