Informationen zu Musikern*innen und Album Gossip (englisch Klatsch; vormals The Gossip) ist eine dreiköpfige Band aus Arkansas und Washington, die eine Mischung aus Disco- und Rockmusik macht. Sie wurde 1999 in Olympia gegründet. Die Bandmitglieder leben heute in Portland. 2016 wurde das Trio aufgelöst, Mitte November 2023 erfolgte ein Comeback. Beth Ditto, Nathan Howdeshell alias Brace Paine und Kathy Mendonca wuchsen gemeinsam in Searcy, Arkansas, auf und zogen 1999 nach Olympia um. Alle drei spielten bereits vorher in lokalen Bands; Ditto war Sängerin bei Little Miss Muffet, Howdeshell spielte bei Mrs. Garrett und den Space Kadetts / Boy Pussy USA und Mendonca bei PooPoo Icee. In Olympia gründeten sie aus einer Laune heraus die Gruppe The Gossip und spielten auf mehreren Konzerten. Sie kamen mit der dortigen Riot-Grrrl-Bewegung in Kontakt und veröffentlichten 1999 ihre Debüt-EP "The Gossip" beim Independent-Label K Records. Sie wurden als Eröffnungsgruppe für eine Tour von Sleater-Kinney engagiert. Viele der hier live gespielten Lieder veröffentlichen sie anschließend auf ihrem Debütalbum "That's Not What I Heard" beim Independent-Label Kill Rock Stars. Es folgen weitere Konzert-Touren auf denen die Gruppe ihre Fan-Gemeinde vergrößern konnte, und die Veröffentlichung des Albums Movement im Mai 2003 (nunmehr als Gossip). 2003 veröffentlichte die Band ihr erstes Live-Album "Undead in NYC". Kurz danach verließ die Schlagzeugerin Kathy Mendonca die Band, um zukünftig als Hebamme zu arbeiten. Öffentliche Aufmerksamkeit erlangt die Gruppe in dieser Zeit durch die teilweise deutlichen Texte und ihrem Engagement gegen die Wiederwahl von George W. Bush. Die erste Veröffentlichung mit der neuen Schlagzeugerin Hannah Blilie war die zusammen mit der Synthie-Pop-Künstlerin Tracy + the Plastics produzierte Split-EP "Real Damage", die im Januar 2005 veröffentlicht wurde. Mit der neuen Schlagzeugerin Hannah Blilie veröffentlichten Gossip 2006 ihr drittes Album "Standing in the Way of Control" erstmals auch in Europa beim Label "L’age d’or". Dieses Album wurde von Guy Picciotto und Ryan Hadlock in Seattle produziert. Das Titellied wurde von Beth Ditto als Reaktion auf die Entscheidung der US-Regierung geschrieben, Schwulen und Lesben das Recht auf die Ehe zu verweigern. „Niemand in den Staaten war von der Entscheidung Bushs erstaunt oder erschüttert, aber alle Personen, die ich kenne, fühlten sich hilflos und betrogen“, sagt Beth, „Ich schrieb den Refrain, um die Leute zu ermutigen, nicht aufzugeben. Es ist eine schlechte Zeit für die Bürgerrechte, aber ich denke, die einzige Möglichkeit zu überleben ist zusammenzuhalten und weiter zu kämpfen.“ Das Album wurde vor allem in Großbritannien ein großer Erfolg. Im gleichen Jahr wurde Beth Ditto Gewinnerin der von der englischen Musikzeitschrift New Musical Express (NME) veröffentlichten NME Cool List; sie war die erste Frau, die in dieser Liste gewann. Der NME bat Ditto daraufhin, im Jahr darauf sich nackt für das Cover der Zeitschrift fotografieren zu lassen, wozu sie sich bereitfand. Im Juni 2009 erschien das Album "Music for Men", welches der Band auch in den deutschsprachigen Ländern zum kommerziellen Durchbruch verhalf. Unterstützt durch die mediale Präsenz von Beth Ditto avancierte besonders die Leadsingle "Heavy Cross" zu einem Dauerbrenner in den deutschen Singlecharts und wurde vom Bundesverband Musikindustrie mit Dreifach-Gold ausgezeichnet. Im September 2010 wurde "Heavy Cross" als „erfolgreichste international produzierte Single“ genannt und brach im Januar 2011 einen Charts-Rekord, als die Single mit der Ausgabe vom 14. Januar zweiundachtzig aufeinanderfolgende Wochen in den deutschen Top 100 notiert war. Mit den erreichten 96 Chartwochen (Stand 22. Information about musicians and album Gossip (English Gossip; formerly The Gossip) is a three-piece band from Arkansas and Washington that plays a mixture of disco and rock music. It was founded in Olympia in 1999. The band members now live in Portland. The trio was disbanded in 2016 and made a comeback in mid-November 2023. Beth Ditto, Nathan Howdeshell aka Brace Paine and Kathy Mendonca grew up together in Searcy, Arkansas and moved to Olympia in 1999. All three had previously played in local bands; Ditto was a singer with Little Miss Muffet, Howdeshell played with Mrs. Garrett and the Space Kadetts / Boy Pussy USA and Mendonca with PooPoo Icee. In Olympia they founded the group The Gossip on a whim and played at several concerts. They came into contact with the local Riot Grrrl movement and released their debut EP "The Gossip" in 1999 on the independent label K Records. They were hired as the opening act for a tour by Sleater-Kinney. They then released many of the songs played live here on their debut album "That's Not What I Heard" on the independent label Kill Rock Stars. This was followed by further concert tours on which the group was able to expand its fan base, and the release of the album Movement in May 2003 (now as Gossip). In 2003 the band released their first live album "Undead in NYC". Shortly afterwards, drummer Kathy Mendonca left the band to work as a midwife. The group gained public attention during this time through their sometimes clear lyrics and their commitment against the re-election of George W. Bush. The first release with new drummer Hannah Blilie was the split EP "Real Damage", produced together with synth-pop artist Tracy + the Plastics, which was released in January 2005. With the new drummer Hannah Blilie, Gossip released their third album "Standing in the Way of Control" in 2006 for the first time in Europe on the label "L'age d'or". This album was produced by Guy Picciotto and Ryan Hadlock in Seattle. The theme song was written by Beth Ditto in response to the US government's decision to deny gays and lesbians the right to marry. “No one in the States was surprised or shocked by Bush's decision, but everyone I know felt helpless and betrayed,” says Beth, “I wrote the chorus to encourage people not to give up. It’s a bad time for civil rights, but I think the only way to survive is to stick together and keep fighting.” The album was a huge success, especially in Great Britain. In the same year, Beth Ditto became the winner of the NME Cool List published by the English music magazine New Musical Express (NME); she was the first woman to win on this list. The NME then asked Ditto to be photographed naked for the cover of the magazine the following year, which she agreed to do. The album “Music for Men” was released in June 2009, which helped the band achieve a commercial breakthrough in German-speaking countries. Supported by Beth Ditto's media presence, the lead single "Heavy Cross" in particular became a long-running hit in the German single charts and was awarded triple gold by the Federal Association of the Music Industry. In September 2010, "Heavy Cross" was named the "most successful internationally produced single" and broke a chart record in January 2011 when the single was listed in the German top 100 for eighty-two consecutive weeks as of the January 14 issue. With 96 chart weeks achieved (as of April 22, 2011), Heavy Cross ranks at number 2 on the all-time favorites in the German single charts.
