The prototype was designed and built by Fairchild's American Pilgrim division, but the program was taken over by General Aviation when the latter bought the American Pilgrim shortly before the prototype's first flight. Although this first flight took place in May 1932, series production did not begin until 1934 when General Motors, in turn, acquired shares in North American Aviation and merged them into General Aviation, which it also owned. The GA-43 thus became the first aircraft produced in North America.
