Description
We offer this original 1855 Map of the Peninsula of India, Comprising the whole of the Madras Presidency, and portions of the adjacent territories of Bengal and Bombay. Derived from the latest surveys and other information collected by Major F.H. Scott, The Quarter Master General ot the Madras Army and corresponding in all details with the Road Book Compiled by that officer. Madras, 1855.
This is a large, hand colored map published in two sections, together measuring 48 x 27 inches (122 x 69 cm). A large and detailed map on a scale of an inch to 24 miles. (Photo of full map is last picture.) Compiled by Scott with assistance from the Grand Trigonometrical Survey of India, the map was drawn up by J.S. Harvey and engraved by J. & C. Walker. Shows mountain ranges, roads and railroads.
It was printed to accompany Scott's Road Book. Usually found cut, mounted on cloth and folded in two sections. We found no other uncut examples.
In the margin of each sheet, written in ink is: Chas. Hewetson, Colonel, 9th May, 1857. Hewetson was with the 5th Bengal Light Cavalry.
It has been stored loosely rolled in paper. Edges are soiled, chipped with some small closed tears. Long tear and an oily stain in upper right of both sheets. Thus this complete map is in just good condition, needing some conservation. Please look at our pictures for more detail.
It will be carefully rolled and shipped in a secure mailing tube. Due to its size, it seems it can only be shipped Priority International Mail overseas.
We have been packing carefully and shipping promptly for more than 25 years.
