Application for Civil War Naval Prize Money. This Application was filed by Joseph Brown who served as a Coal Heaver on the US Steamship Potomsky [sic.] - Correct spelling should be Potomska. This application for prize money is a partially printed form with handwritten details added as testimony that Joseph Brown was serving onboard the USS Potomska when she captured prizes in Charleston Harbor, SC on February 27th, 1865.The information provided indicates that Joseph Brown enlisted around June 3rd, 1864 in Baltimore and was discharged June 3, 1865. At the time of filing, the claimant lived in Paulsborough, NJ. The affidavit was witnessed by Samuel Van Cleef and another Joseph Brown in front of the NY Commissioner of Deeds - Thomas Corbin.
