Vladimir Horowitz (russisch Владимир Самойлович Горовиц / Wladimir Samoilowitsch Gorowiz; hebräisch ולדימיר הורוביץ; ukrainisch Володимир Самійлович Горовиць / Wolodymyr Samijlowytsch Horowyz) (* 18. Septemberjul. / 1. Oktober 1903greg. in Berditschew, Russisches Kaiserreich; † 5. November 1989 in New York City) war ein russischer Pianist und seit 1944 amerikanischer Staatsbürger. Er gilt als einer der berühmtesten Klaviervirtuosen des 20. Jahrhunderts.

Vladimir Horowitz wurde am 1. Oktober 1903 im Schtetl von Berditschew in der russischen Ukraine als Sohn eines Elektroingenieurs geboren. Er stammte aus einer assimilierten jüdischen Familie. Ersten Klavierunterricht erhielt er mit sechs Jahren, noch während seiner Schulzeit studierte er am Kiewer Konservatorium Klavier und Komposition vor allem bei Felix Blumenfeld.

Er verließ mit seinem Freund und Manager Alexander Marowitsch im Herbst 1925 die Sowjetunion und reiste nach Berlin. Am 2., 4. und 14. Januar 1926 veranstaltete die Künstler-Agentur Hermann Wolff & Jules Sachs drei Klavierabende mit Horowitz im Beethoven-Saal der Berliner Philharmonie. Sie wurden zu großen künstlerischen Erfolgen, und die Kritiken waren ausgezeichnet; der letzte Abend war ausverkauft.

Am 25. Oktober 1926 gastierte Horowitz erstmals bei den Berliner Philharmonikern, mit Liszts A-Dur-Konzert unter Wilhelm Furtwängler. Nach Konzerten in London und Paris spielte er am 7. November 1927 zum zweiten Mal mit den Berliner Philharmonikern, diesmal Tschaikowskis b-Moll-Konzert unter Bruno Walter.

Am 12. Januar 1928 debütierte Horowitz mit dem Tschaikowski-Konzert in der Carnegie Hall mit den New Yorker Philharmonikern unter Thomas Beecham.

Am 30. März 1932 spielte Horowitz mit Nathan Milstein und Gregor Piatigorsky in der Carnegie Hall Klaviertrios von Beethoven, Rachmaninow und Brahms. Im selben Jahr konzertierte er in New York City zum ersten Mal mit Arturo Toscanini. Am 21. Dezember 1933 heiratete er dessen Tochter Wanda.

Vom Konzertleben erschöpft und krank, lebte Horowitz von 1934 bis 1938 zurückgezogen in Paris, davon ab 1937 zwei Jahre mit seinem Schüler und Liebhaber Nico Kaufmann.

Dessen zu Lebzeiten unveröffentlichte autobiographische Aufzeichnungen nutzte Lea Singer als Recherchebasis für ihren psychogrammatischen Roman über das Beziehungsleben in Zeiten zwanghaft verheimlichter Homosexualität. Nachdem er schon 1932 die letzten Konzerte in Deutschland gegeben hatte, übersiedelte er 1939 aufgrund der politischen Entwicklung in Europa endgültig in die USA. 1944 erhielt er die amerikanische Staatsbürgerschaft.

Elmar Weingarten und Peter Gelb gewannen ihn 1985 mit einiger List, nach 52 Jahren wieder in Deutschland aufzutreten – durch eine Konzertreise an die Stätten seiner frühen Triumphe. Nachdem er sie am 20. und 27. April 1986[6] in Moskau und Leningrad begonnen hatte, kam der 83-Jährige am 11. Mai 1986 zunächst nach Hamburg. Der Erfolg in der Laeiszhalle stand jenem in der Sowjetunion nicht nach. Richard von Weizsäcker verlieh Horowitz danach das Große Bundesverdienstkreuz mit Stern und Schulterband. Am Pfingstsonntag (18. Mai) empfing ihn das Publikum in der Berliner Philharmonie mit stehenden Ovationen. Vom Jubel überwältigt, spielte er eine Woche später noch einmal – wie Franz Liszt 1842.

Vladimir Horowitz (russisch Владимир Самойлович Горовиц / Wladimir Samoilowitsch Gorowiz; hebräisch ולדימיר הורוביץ; ukrainisch Володимир Самійлович Горовиць / Wolodymyr Samijlowytsch Horowyz) (* 18. Septemberjul. / 1. Oktober 1903greg. in Berditschew, Russisches Kaiserreich; † 5. November 1989 in New York City) was a Russian pianist and an American citizen since 1944. He is considered one of the most famous piano virtuosos of the 20th century.

Vladimir Horowitz was born on October 1, 1903 in the Berdichev shtetl in the Russian Ukraine, the son of an electrical engineer. He came from an assimilated Jewish family. He received his first piano lessons at the age of six, and while still at school he studied piano and composition at the Kiev Conservatory, mainly with Felix Blumenfeld.

He left the Soviet Union with his friend and manager Alexander Marowitsch in autumn 1925 and traveled to Berlin. On January 2, 4 and 14, 1926, the artist agency Hermann Wolff & Jules Sachs organized three piano recitals with Horowitz in the Beethoven Hall of the Berlin Philharmonic. They became great artistic successes and received excellent reviews; the last evening was sold out.

On October 25, 1926, Horowitz made his first guest appearance with the Berlin Philharmonic, performing Liszt's A major Concerto under Wilhelm Furtwängler. After concerts in London and Paris, he played for the second time with the Berlin Philharmonic on November 7, 1927, this time Tchaikovsky's Concerto in B flat minor under Bruno Walter.

On January 12, 1928, Horowitz made his Carnegie Hall debut with the New York Philharmonic under Thomas Beecham, performing the Tchaikovsky Concerto.

On March 30, 1932, Horowitz played piano trios by Beethoven, Rachmaninov and Brahms with Nathan Milstein and Gregor Piatigorsky at Carnegie Hall. In the same year he gave his first concert in New York City with Arturo Toscanini. On December 21, 1933 he married his daughter Wanda.

Exhausted and ill from concert life, Horowitz lived in seclusion in Paris from 1934 to 1938, spending two years from 1937 with his student and lover Nico Kaufmann.

Lea Singer used his autobiographical notes, which were unpublished during his lifetime, as a research basis for her psychogrammatic novel about relationships in times of obsessively concealed homosexuality. After giving his last concerts in Germany in 1932, he finally moved to the USA in 1939 due to political developments in Europe. In 1944 he received American citizenship.

Elmar Weingarten and Peter Gelb managed to win him over in 1985 with some cunning to perform again in Germany after 52 years – through a concert tour to the sites of his early triumphs. After starting it on April 20 and 27, 1986[6] in Moscow and Leningrad, the 83-year-old came to Hamburg on May 11, 1986. The success in the Laeiszhalle was not inferior to that in the Soviet Union.
