HOW CAN YOU IDENTIFY A CONDUCTOR PLATE MADE BY KOSTAL IF THE LOGO HAS BEEN DREMEL OFF?

When an aftermarket distributor sells an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) part, they are legally required to remove the car manufacturer's and OEM's branding. The presence of a Dremeled or ground-off logo is actually the strongest proof that you are holding an authentic, factory-original Kostal conductor plate. Cheap aftermarket clones or counterfeit Chinese copies are molded completely blank from the factory; they never undergo post-production grinding. [1]
To verify that your ground-off plate is indeed a genuine Kostal unit, inspect the component for the following secondary identifiers:
1. The Grinding Pattern
  • Location: Look closely at the ground-down section. On a genuine unit, this area is located exactly where the Mercedes-Benz star or Kostal logo sits on a dealership-bought part. [1]
  • Texture: The plastic will show distinct, localized mechanical rotary tool scrape lines or a rough block pattern, indicating manual or machine modification after it was pulled from the original factory mold.
2. Retained Mold Markings and Engineering Numbers
  • Part Numbers: While distributors grind away explicit brand names or corporate logos, they almost always leave the primary engineering part numbers intact. Check for clean, crisp, raised OEM-formatted numbers (such as 140 270 11 61 for a typical 722.6 transmission plate) molded directly into other areas of the plastic frame. [1, 2]
  • Production Clocks: Authentic plates feature a molded circular "date wheel" or "production clock" that indicates the exact month and year the plastic housing was pressed. Clone plates rarely reproduce these crisply.
3. Hardware Construction and Electrical Pins
  • The Plug Socket: Check inside and around the round electrical guide socket pin housing. Even if the main body is ground down, Kostal often leaves tiny, microscopic internal numeric stamps or small tracking codes inside the plug housing that cheap copycats skip.
  • Copper Tracks: Authentic Kostal plates feature cleanly stamped, perfectly flush, heavily laminated copper conductive pathways embedded into high-grade, fiber-reinforced plastic. Knockoffs usually have thinner copper, loose edges, or rough flashing around the plastic edges.
  • Speed Sensor Potting: Inspect the speed sensor towers. Genuine plates use highly precise, uniform black epoxy potting over the speed sensors to protect them from hot transmission fluid, whereas fakes often use sloppier, uneven sealant. [1, 2]
