You are bidding on a terrific collectible, historic item. You are bidding on a a pay statement from 1863! The document is dated May 22, 1863, Camp near Falmouth, Virginia. The document is authorizing payment to Edward Alling. It is signed by two Civil War soldiers, one of whom was killed in action. 

The document reads as follows: "At sight, or whenever due, pay Edward Alling or order, the Seventh payment of Ten Dollars, due me from the State, under "an Act in addition to an Act to provide for the organization of a Volunteer Militia, and to provide for the public defense." 

The payment is for Edward Alling, Company B, 1st Regiment Artillery, Connecticut Volunteers.. 

The front of the document is signed by J. H. Cummings, 1st Lieut., 1st Connecticut Artillery, who would later be killed in action at Petersburg. The back of the document is signed by Edward Alling.

Lieutenant J. H. Cummings was killed in action in front of Petersburg, Virginia. Some internet research found a report from a Colonel Abbot that states that Lieut. J. H. Cummings, refusing to leave his exhausting labors under fire until too late, and died in consequence of his devotion to duty.

The document measures 7 1/2" wide ad 3 1/2" high. Has some fold marks but remains in very good condition.
