BORODINO '41:
The Battle: The end of the war was in sight, it seemed. In Early October, 1941, the German Army launched Operation "Typhoon". In less than a week, three Soviet fronts, Western, Reserve, and Bryansk, were surrounded. By October 9 some of the mobile forces were being peeled off the encirclement and ordered to push east. General der Panzer Truppen Stumme's XL Panzer Corps, consisting of the 10th Panzer and SS Reich motorized divisions, were ordered to head east on the Warsaw-Moscow Highway. Their first objective was Dorochova, some 60 KM from Moscow. The Panzer Korps was slowed by the resistance of two Soviet tank brigades, so that by October 13, they had only reached the Borodino battlefied, Where Marshal Kutuzov's Russian Army had fought Napoleon to a bloody draw in 1812.
This time there was no army in the invader's path. Between the Germans and Moscow stood one single Red ARmy rifle division. Railed in from Vladivostok, it had arrived just in time to man the partly completed Mozhaisk Defense Line. Reinforced with tanks and antitank guns, Colonel Plosukhin's 32nd Rifle Division had to hold the Germans at all costs. Behind them, there was only the highway to Moscow.
Between October 13th and Octover 18th, the Siberians held, counterattacked, and bled. By the 19th, the Germans succeeded in pushing through and taking Mozhaisk, but at such a cost that the SS division had to dissolve one regiment to rebuild the other two, and the panzer division had lost more than half of its tanks...By this time, reinforcements had filled in behind the Soviet survivors, and the Germans realized that they woud not reach Moscow quickly by this route.
The Game: Based on the award winning BLACK SEA-BLACK DEATH game system, BORODINO '41 uses an updated version with relatively little chrome and a high level of excitement. The impulse based game system keeps both players actively involved. Localized swings in initiative are common, and the situation presents many counterattack options for the Soviet player, even though he is on the operational defensive.
Combat involves fire, and assault, which are influenced by troop morale, terrain effects, armor support, engineers, and various other specialized units. Included are some of the best troops of both sides, as well as Soviet reserve infantry, and tanks ranging from Pzkpfw IIIs & IVs, BT-7s, T_26s, T-34s, a few KV-1s, amphibious T-38s-even a T-28 Co without engines!
