"Fernandomania" was launched in 1981 during which Valenzuela rose from relative obscurity to achieve super-stardom.  He won his first eight starts (five of them shutouts) and in a strike shortened season, Valenzuela won 13 games with a 2.48 ERA.  He became the first, and to date, the only player to win both Cy Young and Rookie of the Year awards in the same season.  Fernando Valenzuela threw a no-hitter in 1990, was a 6x All-Star, World Series Champion (1981), Gold Glove winner (1986), 2x Silver Slugger winner with 10 career home runs, won 173 games, struck out 2,074 batters and had a career ERA of 3.54.
