Interesting book on the fascinating historical subject of the results of the peace won by the Allied Powers in World War One, and its aftermath. John Spencer Bassett (1867-1926) was a professor at Trinity College (now Duke University) and later a professor of history at Smith College, Massachusetts, and executive director of the American Historical Association. Best known for the Bassett Affair in 1902, where he criticized powerful Southern white elites of the time for their treatment of black Americans, and the outrage that followed demanding his resignation from his position at Trinity, the college’s refusal to accept his offer to resign, and the support for him from such luminaries as President Theodore Roosevelt. In this book, Bassett looks at the Great War, its history and the aftermath in Europe and America, analyzing the process of peace and retribution, redrawing borders and punishment, and the League of Nations.
