Ornate Covered Butter Dish Bear Finial Wilcox Silverplate 1880 Mono Mary

American silver plated round form covered butter dish with pierced mazarine plate and swing handle. Body has wide round pedestal, standing on 4 ball feet; it has an engraved inscription "Mary" in period script. Cover has matte finish with a bright cut engraved ornaments and foliate vines as well as figural bear decoration on the top. Handle features applied figural laurel branches on the sides, top is decorated with grape bunches and leaves with a little bird atop. Marked 1051. Quadruple plate. Excellent finish. Made by Wilcox Silver Plate Co., Meriden, CT c. 1880.

This splendid dish measures: body is 5 3/4" in diameter and 1 1/4" deep, mazarine is 7/8" deep, cover is 2 1/4" tall (without the finial); base is 6 1/2" in diameter, handle is 4 3/4" tall; total height (without handle and bear finial) is 5".

The soft, warm, original finish is present, with no buffing or machine polishing.

The excellent original condition and clear, crisp detail, with no removals, repairs or alterations, make this an especially attractive offering.
